Holy Spirit: The One Who Convicts

John 16:8-11

The Holy Spirit is on our side.

The work of the Spirit in the lives of unbelievers:

  • He convicts the unbeliever of sin. vv. 8, 9
  • He confronts the unbeliever with true righteousness. vv. 8, 10
  • He convinces the unbeliever of judgment. vv. 8, 11

Implications:

Our task is simply to proclaim Jesus Christ.

We don’t have to force anyone to believe.

Take Home Idea: The Spirit does what we are incapable of doing - enabling unbelievers to see their sin and their need of Jesus.

"Holy Spirit: The One Who Convicts" Small Group Questions

John 16:8-11

Opening:

How are you at saying “goodbye”?

Review Pastor Joel's sermon and Take Home Idea. What struck you about the sermon?

What do you have questions about?

Dig: Read John 16:5-11

What are the disciples feeling now? What is their grief keeping them from understanding?

What advantages are there in the Holy Spirit coming vs. Jesus remaining?

When it comes to His work with unbelievers, what are the Spirit’s three goals?

How do you understand each of those goals?

How are each of these goals connected to Christ?

Where have you experienced or seen this work of the Holy Spirit? (lives of friends?  Family? Yourself?)

Reflect:

What difference does it make to you knowing that the Holy Spirit is involved in mission with you?

Identify one unbeliever who you are building a relationship with. Ask the Spirit to convict that person of his or her sin and need of Jesus. Then pray for an open door to share the gospel with that person.

How are you allowing “The Wind” to catch you?

Close this time sharing and praying together as a group.
