“Jesus is God’s Love” Discussion Questions

1 John 4:7-12

Opening:

What is your love language? Words of affirmation? Acts of Service? Spending time Giving/Receiving Gifts? Other?

Look at the Take Home idea. Explain it in your own words.

Dig:

"Love" is mentioned 13 times in verses 7-12. What can you learn about: Its origin? Its connection with spiritual reality and knowledge? Its relationship to God? Models of love? Its effects in our lives? Its motives? Its actions? How can it be suppressed? How it can be made complete or perfect?

Is there a difference between saying “Love is God” and “God is Love”? Explain.

From vv. 7-8, what is an indication that a person is born of God? I suspect that everyone in the world demonstrates love at one time or another. Does that mean that everyone in the world is “born of God”? What does the mean, “whoever loves”?

How does Jesus “exegete” God? How does He “exegete” God’s love?

Name the two life-changing truths about God’s love that Pastor Joel listed. Where do you see them in Jesus?

Do you think we would ever know these truths about God’s love if Jesus had not come? Explain.

How are these two truths about God’s love applied to the Christian? (v. 11)

ESV uses the word, “perfected” in v. 12. The word means, “completed”, that is, God’s love is made complete in us. How is God’s love made complete in us?

Reflect:

How does God’s love, made evident in Jesus Christ, impact you?

How have you experience perfect fear casting out love? God's love casting out fear?

How do you allow God’s love to be evident in your life? (Hint: v. 13)

How do you want to put this type of sacrificial love into action this week at home? Work? In an especially hard relationship? In the way you plan your time? Your budget? In the type of activities you support? Your political views? Involvement in social issues?

Close by praying together about how you might be shine His light together.
