Discussion Questions

Opening:

What is the largest group you have ever had over for dinner? What did you feed them?

Look at the Take Home idea. Explain it in your own words.

Dig:

Read John 6:1-15.

Why did the crowd follow Jesus? What did they think about him?

Read Mark 6:30-44. What additional insights does this give you about the situation and why Jesus was taking his disciples to this place?

What was the test that Jesus was using on Philip (and the other disciples)? How might the other miracles Jesus had done up to this point (wedding of Cana, healing of official's son, healing of lame man) be a factor in this test? From their responses, what grade would you give Philip? Andrew?

How do you think the little boy felt when they asked for his sack lunch?

What is the significance of the fact that there was more left over after they all ate than when they first began?

What truths about Jesus does this miracle show?

How might the nearness of the Passover feast (when Jews from all over would flock to Jerusalem) fuel the desires of the people in vs. 14-15?

What does Jesus' response indicate about his idea of his kingship?

Reflect:

When have you experienced God stretching your limited resources (physically and emotionally) far beyond what you could have imagined? How do you need to trust him to do so now?

In what ways are you like Philip and Andrew? In what ways are you like the little boy?

How do you react when you are faced with an overwhelming need?

Where are you now in listening to God's call for action? (place yourself between the phrases)

God is on the phone right now ……………………………….. I make sure I am not at home when God calls.

Close by sharing your answers and then praying together.
